Calculus: Single Variable. Publisher: Key College Publishing/Springer Verlag. In this volume, too, Blank and Krantz clearly demonstrate their personal opinion about how calculus should be taught, and many times they come right out and spell it out for the reader. For instance on page 73, the student who bothers to read the supplementary but highly relevant Genesis and Development section following Chapter 1 will be told why a calculus instructor insists on proving assertions in class.

Calculus is one of the milestones of human thought. Every well-educated person should be acquainted with the basic ideas of the subject. In today’s technological world in which more and more ideas are being quantified, knowledge of calculus has become essential to a broader cross-section of the population.

This Debut Edition of Calculus by Brian E. Blank and Steven G. Krantz is published in two volumes, Single Variable and Multivariable. Teaching and writing from the traditional point of view, these authors have distilled the lessons of reform and bring you a calculus book focusing on today’s best practices in calculus teaching.

Aside from a large number of errors in this first edition, Blank & Krantz have produced a solid text with just the right amount of "frills". I found it relatively easy to work through the first half on my own as a review of first semester calculus. I worked through the second half as part of a class, and I especially enjoyed the historical notes at the end of each chapter as a supplement to the lectures. The book comes with a one-time registration for supplementary material on the publisher's web site; I found that material mildly useful, but missing out on it is not a deal-breaker if you prefer to buy used. Also note that the study guide can be purchased separately; I did find the worked-out solutions in the study guide useful for some of the problems. I'm not sure I'll keep this text as a reference, but it's a good way to learn or review the material for first year calculus.

It was great. Very clean and new. Honestly, as if I bought it in the store. And it was a lot cheaper!

pretty good deal. I really did not want to pay the retail price for this book because it was a lot more than $8

This book is not helpful if your calculus skills are not strong. Rather helping you work through it, it gives you information and then assumes you should be able to apply it right off the bat. If you're a talented mathematician and this shouldn't be a problem for you then buy this book. If you prefer to have things explained to you then I wouldn't recommend it. Though I agree with an earlier review, that the historical notes at the end of a chapter are intriguing and a good idea.
