There ar. roblems, all potentially useful to anyone teaching probability and mathematical statistics. One of the better problem-solving books but not as difficult as I had hoped. I have around 20 books of math puzzles and do them online

There ar. The difficulty level ranges nicely from elementary to sophisticated, so most readers will find something challenging here. Mark Bollman, MathDL, January, 2008). In this work, Schwar. rovides a collection of problems involving probability theory and mathematical statistics. I have around 20 books of math puzzles and do them online. I would call this one low-to-medium difficulty (I do difficult math puzzles). About a 5 on a scale of 1-10.

Understanding Probability and Statistics: A Book of Problems. In elementary mathematical statistics, one studies in some detail various characteristics of the distribution of a scalar random variable. Thus its density and various parameters are considered and statements are made regarding this variable

The present book is based on the view that cognitive skills are best acquired by solving challenging, non-standard probability problems.

The present book is based on the view that cognitive skills are best acquired by solving challenging, non-standard probability problems. The author's own experience, both in learning and in teaching, is that challenging problems often provide more, and longer lasting, inductive insights than plain-style deductions from general concepts. Problems help to develop, and to sharpen our intuition for important probabilistical concepts and tools such as conditionaing or first-step analyses

Problems related to probability theory come first, followed by problems related to the application of probability in the field of mathematical statistics.

Probability & Statistics Mathematics Books. Many puzzles and problems presented here are either new within a problem solving context or are variations of classical problems which follow directly from elementary concepts. A small number of particularly instructive problems is taken from previous sources. As a student I discovered in our library a thin booklet by Frederick Mosteller entitled50 Challenging Problems in Probability.

From that evening, I caught on to probability. These two books were not primarily about abstract formalisms but rather about basic modeling ideas and about ways - often extremely elegant ones - to apply those notions to a surprising variety of empirical phenomena

Many puzzles and problems presented here are either new within a problem solving context (although as topics in fundamental research they are long known) or are variations of classical problems which follow directly from elementary concepts. A small number of particularly instructive problems is taken from previous sources which in this case are generally given. This book will be a handy resource for professors looking for problems to assign, for undergraduate math students, and for a more general audience of amateur scientists.

The problems and goals are clearly worded.

If you like 'thinking' puzzles, this is a decent book. I got it at the bargain-book-table at a local bookstore. I don't consider this to be a book worth $40. I only paid $5 for it. It's worth $5.

4 stars is fair.

What an excellent, excellent problem-puzzle book! This book lays the groundwork for puzzlers of the 21st century.

At a buck a puzzle, every aspiring/amateur probabilist should buy this book... and while you're at it, buy one for your dramatist brother.
