In these notes we present an outline of the theory of the archetypal L∞ variational problem in the calculus of variations. Namely, given an open U ⊂ IRn and b ∈ C(∂U), find u ∈ C (Ū) which agrees with the boundary function b on ∂U and minimizes. The progress Hilbert was talking about is based – in mathematics more than in other scientific fields – upon teaching and collaboration and the imagination De Morgan was referring to, must be stimulated through a progressive and gradual learning.

These Proceedings comprise the bulk of the papers presented at the Inter national Conference on Semigroups of Opemtors: Theory and Contro~ held 14-18 December 1998, Newport Beach, California, . The intent of the Conference was to highlight recent advances in the the ory of Semigroups of Operators which provides the abstract framework for the time-domain solutions of time-invariant al-value problems of partial differential equations. There is of course a firewall between the ab stract theory and the applications and one of the Conference aims was to bring together both.

Book Condition: Item may show signs of shelf wear. Pages may include limited notes and highlighting. author succeeds admirably in his goal of providing an introduction to semigroup theory suitable for graduate students and non-specialists.
Book Condition: Item may show signs of shelf wear. May not include supplemental or companion materials if applicable. At the same time, specialists will also find much to attract them. The book is highly readable, and the author takes pain to lead the reader gently through the longer proofs.
Haïm Brezis Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France . Ronald G. Douglas Texas A & M University. Motivated by applications to control theory and to the theory of partial differential equations (PDE's), the authors examine the exponential stability and analyticity of C0-semigroups associated with various dissipative systems.
