I was looking for a way to enhance my conceptual understanding of calculus. This book goes over very very basic calculus concepts but not anything that I have troubles with (like using 3 lines to create a plane, or riemann sums, or relating any of the physical representations to the notation used, which is why I purchased the book). It also jumps from subject to subject with no relationship between them.

I have been trying to teach myself calculus. It's not easy. This book is very different from all of my other choices because of the emphasis on heavily color-coded graphics. I suspect that this is a great approach for those of you who are ready for it, but be aware that this author seems to believe that the reader already knows a fair amount of calculus and wishes to create a visually oriented review. Still, the use of color and the vivid graphics make a nice change from the usual dry text. I suspect most students of calculus would find this book highly useful. Buy this one.

I had calculus several decades ago and bought this book just to get back into thinking mathematically for a past time.

Not enough practice problems and on page 86, the first example, there is an error in the problem. I recognized the error because like I said I had Calculus decades. There are no errata sheets available.

On the face of it, this reference looks wonderful: the major topics of calculus explained clearly and concisely. There is a lot of color coding to help the reader understand how to get from step to step. Like most calculus resources I've seen, it would be difficult to really learn calculus concepts through a book without already having a pretty good idea of what you were doing. So this would most benefit, for example, a student who was a little confused and just needed some reinforcement. Or someone that hasn't done calculus for the past two years and needs a refresher. There are not enough examples or practice problems to solidify one's skills, so you would need an additional resource for that.

Unfortunately, there are many, many errors in this book. Some postings pointed out a couple. I found dozens. Some errors are minor, like inconsistent color coding or a parentheses that is not closed. Many errors, though, are significant: answers are flat out wrong, middle steps are incomplete, graphs are not aligned properly, etc. In fact, you can get an errata from the publisher that lists errors on over 50 different pages (out of 291 pages). That's poor proof-reading and editing. If you knew calculus, you would probably get past these errors, but if you knew calculus, you wouldn't need this book at all.

I bought this book as a calculus refresher, at which it does a fairly good job. I would not consider it to be what it's title states, which is "Teach Yourself Calculus", it's to brief and choppy. So if you want to review your calculus, its an OK read. If you want to learn calculus, this is not the one for you. Also, there are so many mistakes in it, of all types (mathematical and grammatical), that I would have to say they never proof read it. Even if you're not doing the math and just reading it, they're frequent and glaring, almost to the point where I doubt the calculations being presented.

I got this book today to help me with my calculus course, and found an error on page 79. It is a breakdown of several ways to write out the answer and the author and its editors left out an "x" on the very last problem. The subject is difficult enough and using supplemental material that one is unable to trust due to errors such as this cause the one star rating. Who knows what other errors, mistakes or forgotten variables and numbers are in this book. Another rater found an error on another page as well.
