Fractal geometry can be used to develop a multiscale approach to investigate the spatial organization of urban fabrics

Fractal geometry can be used to develop a multiscale approach to investigate the spatial organization of urban fabrics. First, the concepts behind fractal reference models are introduced so as to provide a better understanding of the results obtained from empirical analyses of urban patterns. Le projet MobiSim (simulation des mobilités) vise à modéliser différentes dynamiques à différentes échelles pour simuler la complexité des mobilités quotidiennes et résidentielles, sur l'espace d'une aire urbaine.

by Pierre Frankhauser. In urban planning, the definition of limits of towns or of town sections is required in particular in the context of zoning. Such definition is purely conventional and does not refer to the morphological reality of urban areas. Even if it is possible to identify limits of zones by means of functional criteria, until now no appropriate method exists to define limits on the base of morphological criteria. This lack becomes particularly obvious when tackling with periurban areas. Thus, it is here proposed to analyse urban limits through a multi-scale approach, which makes it possible to study urban patterns by avoiding the introduction of any presupposition on the urban spatial structure.
