In-principle restrictions on the amount of information that can be gathered about a system have been proposed as a foundational principle in several recent reconstructions of the formalism of quantum mechanics. However, it seems unclear precisely why one should be thus restricted. We investigate the notion of paradoxical self-reference as a possible origin of such epistemic horizons by means of a fixed-point theorem in Cartesian closed categories due to Lawvere that illuminates and unifies the different perspectives on self-reference.

The scope of presentation makes it useful not only to physicists but to a much larger audience of non-physicists who need a quick introduction to the statistical aspects in their own field. Jacek Banasiak, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1131 (9), 2008).

Classical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics describe systems in which nothing interacts with nothing. The fact that a temperature and an entropy may be associated with horizons in semi-classical general relativity has led many to suspect that spacetime has microstructure.

The classical version and the quantum version of Witten's model are studied in detail

The classical version and the quantum version of Witten's model are studied in detail. Exact spectral properties of the model for the so-called shape invariant potentials are discussed. The quasi-classical quantization rules are derived

Statistical mechanics is a branch of theoretical physics that uses probability theory to study the average behaviour of a mechanical system, where the state of the system is uncertain. A common use of statistical mechanics is in explaining the thermodynamic behaviour of large systems. An important subbranch known as non-equilibrium statistical mechanics deals with the issue of microscopically modelling the speed of irreversible processes that are driven by imbalances. Examples of such processes include chemical reactions or flows of particles and heat.
