Pastor Calvin Miller had great and precious gifts, among them was the ability to write well. This book recognizes several people he remembers as being an influence in his life so he writes "letters" to the deceased in heaven. A novel idea! Readers become engrossed quickly, searching their hearts for memories of their own. This is a personal book written before this good pastor died. I enjoyed it and bought some copies to share with others.

There is some sadness and some regret in these letters to the departed. To balance this book, and to complete my review, I urge you who are reading this to check out a poem by F.W. Brazier: "If with pleasure you are viewing, any work a man is doing, if you like him or you love him, TELL HIM NOW! Don't withhold your approbation till the priest makes his oration, and he lies with snowy blossoms over his brow. For no matter how you shout it he won't really care about it. He won't know how many teardrops you have shed. If you think some praise is due him, now's the time to slip it to him, for he cannot read his tombstone when he's dead"......

There is more to the poem, and because Pastor Miller was also a poet, he may have read the above at one time or another. There are several quotes in this book worth underlining. Many of the "letters" are directed to deceased folk we all remember.

When asked what surprised him the most about life, Billy Graham responded, "the brevity of it.". So, to include another verse of Brazier's poem, I will end with what I know Pastor Calvin Miller would readily agree with: "More than fame and more than money is the comment kind and sunny, and the hearty warm approval of a friend. For it gives to life a savor, makes him stronger, braver, and it gives him heart and courage to the end."

Dr. Calvin Miller has written a book unique among books on the market today! Letters to Heaven is a must-read! Calvin looks back over his long and extraordinary life, remembers friends, family, and chance meetings with fascinating people, and then writes each deceased person a "letter to heaven." Some of the letters are tender--a letter to his mother, a letter to his 10-year-old brother that died when Calvin was only a toddler. Others are surprising, like the man that died in the seat next to the author on an airplane in a thunderous storm. Other letters are funny and witty. Each letter touched my heart. The book made me think back over all the people I've met over a long lifetime and imagine what I, myself, wish to tell them. I began reading Dr. Miller's books upon discovering The Singer Trilogy. I had never read anything like it! I was hooked! Since then, I have read everything Dr. Miller has written and published--everything! And each book has been a delight--from his children's books to his books to seminarians and pastors, to his novels! I have followed his career from the days he pastored a mega-church, to his teaching at different seminaries. Miller combines a rare sense of humor and wit, scholarship, tenderness, and extraordinary creativity to his writing! I am the richer for reading his books! I gave this book, Letters to Heaven, 5 stars. I wish I could have given it 100,000 stars!

Letters to Heaven is a fascinating book. Calvin Miller writes to people who have preceded him in reaching eternity. Each person impacted his life. A number of the people he writes to are well known including C.S. Lewis, Todd Beamer, and Madeleine L'Engle. Many are unknown. The girl in the iron lung brings memories of polio, the most dreaded childhood disease in the 20th Century. Another letter is written to a man who died beside him on a flight. He includes a letter to his mother and one to a brother who died in childhood. Throughout Miller weaves his own experiences and share much wisdom.

Calvin Miller was a pastor, a professor and a writer. I previously read Life is Mostly Edges (a memoir) and Letters to Young Pastors (both excellent). I wanted to read this book because he replied kindly when I sent him a copy of my book, Changing Churches. Also, I knew he recently went on to eternity himself. He impacted my life in a small but meaningful way.

Calvin Miller has aways been one of my top favorite writers. It is very poignant in reading this last book he wrote before his own death with it being letters to those in heaven that he wanted to tell of their influence in his life. Now - well, he is walking hand in hand with them and filling in any gaps in what limited him in writing this book! I found it a nice one to pick up and read one of the entries - they are independent of each other although it is a hard book to put down as he writes with such delight.

This book is a very honest view of heaven from Dr. Miller's viewpoint, and needs to be read with a box of Kleenex. Dr. Miller write these letters to people that have already passed to heaven before him. I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Miller while attending Seminary. He's a great speaker and writer! The seller's give you excellent service when you buy from them. I give them 5 Star Excellent Service!

Calvin Miller had the unusual talent to mix spiritual depth with a wonderful writing style. The stories he included in this book are moving and insightful.

Another book that is in a genre that everyone wants a piece of. Just don't waste the money. Individual experiences are just that. Individual and they may be real. They may mean well, but like the little boy - we have never actually heard from teh LITTLE BOY - only his dad. The movie does not match the book - so don't buy - if you find in a goodwill, or a free box you might want to see it but it isn't worth it.
Calvin Miller is no longer with us on earth but wrote of heaven and the people he knew or had admired in a way that is comforting and hopeful and now he knows for sure. If you are grieving or have or think you might in the future this is very good.
