Intriguing informative and well thought out. Even though this is a technical in-depth study Dr Berne makes it accessibly and charming with his spontaneous and humerus writing. A very enjoyable read.

Interesting book but not really about the connection between love and sex. Read it all but didn't feel an increase in knowledge promised by the title. Lots of extraneous material.

I enjoyed this book very much. It talks about the different types of relationships we have, and why we do the things we do. It had a lot of interesting information.

I bought and read this book years ago. The title was probably used make the book sound "sexy", when in reality it is a very well written book of the love that can be shared between a woman and man. It has a bit of appropriate humor and a great deal of the romance that can develope between two people that have "found" each other. One fine example are words taken from a short story of the love that can be developed between two lovers. i.e. "when one dies, the other soon follows". I have enjoyed reading the excerps many times. Of course sex is discussed, but always in a loving way.

Canadian born American psychiatrist and quasi-trained/rejected psychoanalyst Eric Berne (Eric Leonard Bernstein), M.D., C.M. (1910-1970), was the man who wrote "Games People Play" in 1964, one of the first works based on his earlier creation of Transactional Analysis (TA), a therapy which draws from psychoanalysis, bereft of an unconscious. (American writer Richard Dean Rosen, in his volume "Psychobabble: Fast Talk and Quick Cure in the Era of Feeling" [1975], says of TA, "People spend their...lives following a 'life script,' composed of 'transactions' and 'games'.... To each...Berne assigns a name.... The individual involved...is divided into.... Parent, Adult, and Child...often synonymous with Freud's superego, ego, and id....with a new...vocabulary.... As for...theory, there is nothing in it that one can't find in Freud, Adler, Sullivan, drama therapy....but the danger is...patients will...see themselves...as combinations of detachable roles and ego states.")

Berne's 265 page book (interspersed with numerous diagrams), "Sex in Human Loving" (1970), also incorporates TA and is based on his contribution to the Jake Gimbel Sex Psychology lectures, University of California, 1966. The volume is divided into three parts. Part I discusses why sex is essential, the act of sex, and how the sex organs are exploited. Part II covers human relationships, games, and intimacy. Part III, queries, a helpful book list, marriage, and aphorisms. Following that is an appendix with a taxonomy of relationships.

A topic I found intriguing was Berne's treatment of obscenity (including blue movies, et al) in his book's Introduction, wherein he proclaims, that it "...is based on deep and universal psychological factors dating from childhood.... In the extreme case, obscenity becomes a way of living. The pornographer, sentenced to life in the bedroom...will never see...the sunshine."

It should be said that stimulating one's sexual fantasies with erotic materials is a phenomenon that began in pristine times. In Victorian days the dosage of pornography was inordinate, representative of the repressive attitudes towards sexuality, extant even to this day.

At present scientific research has progressed rapidly in the field of pornology, so it is the contention of at least most of the sexological cognoscenti that the usage of pornography is but an innocuous ancilla to one of the most common of all sexual activities. Such an interest should not be condemned, for explicit sexual materials can fulfill a diverse array of human needs, which are not nearly as often present in the chaotic mind, a belief as commonplace as it is erroneous. The reason pornography has always tantalized people is because of its forbidden quality, in that it vivifies the infantile in everyone, bringing out the innermost dynamics from the shadow of the personality. Few want to be everlastingly espoused to life's rote routines. This is proof that there is more than one kind of consciousness, and because part of life is fantasy one need not think fantasizing should be a raw and almost solitary event.

So erotica and many other topics are uniquely embraced psychologically by maverick Dr. Berne in "Sex in Human Loving," where "Eric earns his blue stripes wailing away with bad boys."
