He was called the greatest jockey who ever rode but until now no one knew that the man who won the Kentucky Derby was only months away from losing his wife to suicide, or that when he won the title of winingest jockey of all time, he was the subject of an FBI investigation.

At least since Michelangelo, serious artists of the genre have known the value of a clinical study of anatomy. Begins with the structural characteristics of bones and muscle mass. Hundreds of drawings illustrate both the underlying structure and the exterior of the face, torso, arms, legs, hands, and feet in a wide range of poses, complete with proper scientific terminology. Cassell - Drawing Human Anatomy. This classic treatment by a master teacher offers clear, detailed instruction on drawing the human figure. Many pencil and charcoal illustrations depict eyes, arms, feet, and other fundamental features.

He was called the greatest jockey who ever rode but until now no one knew that the man who won the Kentucky Derby was only months away from losing his wife to suicide, or that when he won the title of winingest jockey of all time, he was the subject of an FBI investigation. With unflinching candor, Cain reveals Laffit Pincay’s greatest triumphs and fiercest struggles: the famed races, the unrivaled self-discipline, the relentless drive, the cheating, the betrayals, and the violence. Pincay may have lived the high life but he often was forced to pull himself out of the depths of hell. The Pincay story is shocking, poignant and soul-bearing – an awe-inspiring look at one of the worlds greatest living legends. It is truly the anatomy of a winner.

"Laffit Pincay, Jr. is arguably the greatest jockey who ever lived. In this remarkable book, Cain takes you inside the circus-type world that is horse racing. The writing is eloquent. You will not put it down." Larry King, LARRY KING LIVE

"It's a shocker. All through the glory years, when he was riding high as the sun and being showered with public adulation and wealth, Pincay was spinning from one domestic nightmare to another. . .It's a harrowing tale, much of it self-inflicted, and Pincay does not spare himself." I was drawn to this man' life story initially when realizing his 1973 bid for a triple crown was dashed by what he calls the greatest horse he has ever seen, Secretariat. My gut question was how do you come back emotionally & mentally from your greatest effort, set joint records yet still not capture the prize. After reading, there are many things you could say about the book and Mr. Pincay's life. Entwined in all those are honesty, transparency & sincerity. Humble beginnings, success, elusive wins, extreme victory, tragedy, comeback, more victory, accolades & even greater trials & challenges and then solace. These are not made up events to sell books but true events to reveal a real life. So I say, Mr. Pincay, thanks for your story. TF

This book is about a man's enduring human spirit. Ms. Cain eloquently and deftly explains the parts and pieces of Mr. Pincay's life within the dangerous sport of thoroughbred racing.
Through her writing, I marveled at Mr. Pincay's resolve, focus and commitment from an early age in this highly competitive sport as well as his confronting the negatives of uncertain employment/wages/insurance/family emotion.
Mr. Pincay is known for courage in the racing field but I see from this book his great courage, too, in baring extremely personal facts about his life.

I had bought this book for some research I was doing, and never intended to read it word-for-word. However, no matter where I turned to in the book, I found myself unable to put it down! I finally went back to the beginning and literally read it almost in one sitting cover-to-cover! What an incredible life - very inspiring. This book is so well written, it brought me from tears of sadness, then to joy, then to feeling almost sick to my stomach as they described his injury, then to anger at how unnecessary it all was, and finally to an incredible feeling of awe at his perseverance. I highly recommend this book...just be ready to have your emotions torn in all different directions!

Came across this book and had to get it. When I lived in California many weekends were spent at Santa Anita race track and I have to admit that Laffit always brought a smile to my face. It has been many years since I have seen this man but reading this book was like visiting an old and dear friend.

How on earth Madelyn Cain, whose two previous books were called "The childless Revolution" and "First Time Mother, last Chance Babies" was chosen as Biographer for one of the best Jockeys ever, and who on earth chose her to do that job, must remain a mystery. The book certainly mirrors just that, it can be judged as a nice try but leaves a lot to be desired. Even though Laffit Pincays life certainly did not lack disaster and tragedy off the racecourse too, after all he became famous as a master of horseracing, and on that subject the book does not even deserve one star. Horses are rarely mentioned in this book, and are certainly just a side occurence. In fact Cain goes as far as writing that Pincay did not win a Kentucky Derby early in his career because his mount "a five to two chance broke down in the race and finished a disappointing fifth". Ok well, what a shame to come fifth on a striken horse then ... As mentioned in previous review, the book is ill-researched, and gets certain facts and most seemingly dates wrong - Pincays daughter Lisa is born in 1967 but is 15 by the time her mother dies in 1985. Cain very obviously concetrates on Pincays off-track life and shows a lot of sympathy for her subject in that respect, but the use of quotations for conversations long held and only recall-able from one side are a dangerous tool in my eyes.
The book is cheaply illustrated with small black- and white photos embedded between the text, no proper colour photos of his great winners in extra pages for example. Cain adds a list of Pincays most important winners and a list of his diet in retirement - that says something as well!
While her writing is easy to read, this book is one missed opportunity and clearly not worthy of this great sportsman. One could say I gave it two stars out of respect for his clearly troubled life.

There are things in this book that even fellow jockeys who rode against Laffit never knew about him. It's a terrific book about an extremely honorable, genuine, classy, sincere, driven and disciplined man. I am honored to be able to consider him a friend.

I had read that the life of a jockey was not an easy one. What an eye opener Laffit's story is. I enjoyed this thoroughly and I hurt for him.
Madelyn Cain scores big with this heartbreaking yet hopeful story of Laffit Pincay, athlete extraordinaire. Clearly this author has a gift for getting to the core of the man who battled demons to become the world's greatest jockey. As you turn the pages, you feel the pain of a man struggling to come to grips not only with his guilt but with his unwavering determination to succeed. It's a great read if you're a racing fan and just as good a read if you're not.
