Sergeant Shenk's Comprehensive Book on Knife Throwing. Knife Throwing: A Practical Guide. Having seen both the book and the video by Ralph Thorn and knowing something about shuriken, I can give some facts. The grip he calls the "overhand" grip is a Japanese shuriken grip. If he knew this, he didn't mention it. What he calls the "spear style" throw in the book and the "spinless" throw in the dvd are technically a quarter-spin throw. Japanese shuriken masters have been doing this type of throwing for hundreds of years.

First, I paid $26 for this DVD. For that price it was absolutely outstanding it's worth more. I found the instruction and the explanation of the methodology excellent. However you do still have to practice it's not magic but when you slow down and follow the instruction it works. Then it's just a matter of practice I tried this on a variety of different knives and of course each threw differently since they were different knives but following the method it worked. And as I practice more I got better. I still can't imagine throwing a knife in combat, and I'm not hitting exactly where I want to yet. If I can find the time to practice I'm confident that what I'm learning here will be helpful. I haven't read the book but the instruction on this DVD is a good start. In summary this DVD is worth whatever you're willing to pay for instruction I find this better than the videos I've seen on YouTube though I haven't seen them all. I don't know if the book would be any better. But if you want instruction I would buy this for up to $50 baby 75 you have enough cash that you want to get rid of. Maybe even more. However at that point I would be watching YouTube, trying to get a cheap copy of the book, and trying what I was learning to see if it worked.

This is an interesting book but it seems dated compared to the DVD by the same person who wrote the book. With the combination of the two, I will possess the knowledge of another method of knife throwing.

This is a good instructional book on spear-type knife throwing but the author has never been in a knife fight or doesn't seem to train with other people so I'm not sure how effective his techniques are.
But I bought the book simply to learn to throw spear style, which it does well. The book has a lot of "fluff" but its' interesting. The actual technique is maybe 20 or 30 pages out of the 110 pages in the book.
I've been a circus-style thrower before reading this book and I also disagree with the author on a few issues regarding circus-style throwing. You only have to see Michael Pearl's knife throwing DVD to see that a circus style thrower can throw accurately at 40 feet.
Spear style throwing is better suited for combat and it is easier to learn than circus-style. I was able to stick targets consistently the first day using spear style but part of the reason may have been because of my previous knife throwing experience.
One last point with spear style throwing is the fact that the knives are harder to carry (and conceal) when compared to circus-style knives since the handle end has to be weighted with tape.
I found Cold Steel makes the best throwing knives for circus style throwing and they also work well for spear style throwing (when weighted of course).
