First things first; I've been a student of Burton since 1995. Some people might think that my review is biased, and they are free to believe that. I believe that my review is more accurately characterized as informed.

The material in "Choke `em Out" is a thorough representation of the material that Burton teaches his students. Although the book can't completely capture the training experience, it does provide the reader with techniques and tactics that they can incorporate into their own training.

The beginning of the book is devoted to training philosophy. This section includes: why chokes should be incorporated into your training; how you should train and practice chokes; how chokes work; how pain compliance differs from involuntary compliance (i.e. cranks vs. chokes); and when to use chokes.

The book then moves on to actual choking techniques. It begins with three primary choking techniques (referred to as the "Three Kings") that are easy to learn and that frequently present themselves in self defense situations. These three chokes are: the front collar choke; the rear sleeper choke; and the guillotine choke. After the "Three Kings" are shown, numerous transitions and advanced choke variations are presented. The advanced choke variations include not only variations of the "Three Kings," but also include other chokes like the triangle choke, the arm triangle choke, the cross collar choke, the clock choke, the gogoplata, the Von Flue choke, and many more.

"Choke `em Out" is an excellent book for anyone looking to improve their choking skills. Beginners can focus on developing proficiency with the "Three Kings," while intermediate and advanced players can focus on incorporating the advanced choke variations into combinations. Additionally, while "Choke `em Out" is geared primarily towards self-defense choking techniques, it still contains many techniques that are applicable in mixed martial arts and sport grappling.

First off, I'm no master of chokes which is why I bought the book in the first place. However, I know what makes a good choke and how they feel (both giving & receiving).

The two things that impressed me most about the book:

1. The extensive manner (70+ pages) in which he covers how to get to the back and maintain position
2. The depth and details he gives regarding the chokes and their variations

My only gripe (and it's minor) is that his section on integrating strikes with chokes is pretty slim, but it does give an idea about why and how one should integrate striking with chokes.

With that said, I unabashedly recommend this tome for anyone wanting to increase their beginner / intermediate understanding of chokes and how to make them work.

as an experienced and internationally known seminar draw and published author on Eastern and Western Martial Arts disciplines, with over 45 years of experience, this book is a grand tour of the many wonderful ways to choke out an opponent. I highly recommend the author for the way he approached the subject, the clarity of his explanations, and the vivid illustrations of the applications he presents in this seminal work. Great Job Burt!

"Choke 'em Out: 65 Chokes to End Any Fight Fast" is an extremely worthwhile addition to any self-defense, MMA or BJJ library. It covers the importance of the choke as a viable and high percentage tactic in real world situations, basic physiology and positioning, multiple variations and proper training methods. It excels in particular in its "To The Back" and "The Back" chapters of the book, explaining in detail and at length how achieve the most difficult aspect of applying a choke - the fight to get to the back, how to gain an advantageous position and what to do when you're there. Highly recommended!

I would really like to see a DVD of all the chokes to study them in more detail as well as a sense of timing in the moves. Also as your facing multiple combatants you need to take out your opponent quickly. Applying force properly is critical to survival. I would also like to see a video using rope and sticks as coke tools. Possibly a belt works good too.

I think this is well put together program, however would have liked to see more stand techniques, because in my opinion most people would be looking at self defense when purchasing. We know that fights often hit the ground in real life but we all want to end it without a roll in mud. If you thinking ground fighting then BJJ , wrestling already addresses this issue.

One of the best books on chokes and taking the back in my opinion. Worldclass! I think you must have chokes in your toolbox. This book is the how and why about the chokes. A must read book!
Burton Richardsons reputation as a world class martial arts instructor and author speaks for itself. One of the best (and most thorough )books on the subject.
