Pierre de Coubertin (president from 1896 to 1925) is broadly accepted as the founder of the modern Games, and with the words of the Olympic scholar John J. MacAloon, it may be said that, 'No modern institution so important as the Olympics owes its existence fully to the actions of a single person'. 42 Its origin, structure, symbols, and official ideology still bear much of Coubertin's stamp. Coubertin was both an educationalist and a social reformer as well as the founder of Olympism, the ideology of the Olympic movement.
