Beetlejuice meets Eloise in this humorous, goth debut. The creators of French Kitty( introduce a new heroine for the goth girl-Ruby Gloom, a doe-eyed redhead who's a friend to what's strange. Here, in 17 lessons for life, Ruby explains that she looks on the bright side of things-even if it is actually a dark side.

Ruby Gloom is a young girl who dresses in black and enjoys the darker side of things: black cats, bats, ghosts, crows, two-headed . I’ve never read a Ruby Gloom book before so I thought this was very nice and helpful to new readers.

Ruby Gloom is a young girl who dresses in black and enjoys the darker side of things: black cats, bats, ghosts, crows, two-headed dolls and moonlit nights. While containing dark subject matter, the drawings are not scary in any manner. Many of them are even humorous. They even remind me of some of the simple joys of childhood, like making shadows on the wall and riding bikes. I also liked how the covers of this book are covered in black velvet. It actually reminds me of a fuzzy bat Halloween card I received as a kid long ago.

Ruby Gloom is a Canadian flash-animated television series based on the Mighty Fine apparel franchise character of the same name by cartoonist, Martin Hsu. The series was produced by Nelvana and began airing on October 13, 2006 in Canada on the network YTV. It features the voices of Sarah Gadon, Emily Hampshire, Peter Keleghan, and Adrian Truss

Right now I am still not sure where or whatever made my sister to trip over this but within her lifestyle she has embraced it for her daughter. Although it is a lot cleaner than Bratz and not as full face like Monster High it still makes me wonder, especially since for a little known cartoon show, which has now been made into books.

Anyway this particular book can be geared towards children but all in all I think the audience is actually for those who may be slightly older due to the subject. Basically the book just takes old adages and gives them a twist to suit the nature of the cartoon such as using her friend Misery or adding a cocky reply such as having seven skeletons.

For the illustrations it uses actual illustrations that could be found in the cartoon itself so the coloring of the book is a bit on the darkish side although it matches the nice material cover. And for those who are into the show then it will make sense who the other characters may be or why they are used.

My only complaint with the book is that they don't use all the characters from the show, especially when there is a place within the book that the character would be more acceptable such as the two heads are better than one. As a result the gallery that is included in the front and back just behind and before the covers is incomplete.

Altogether it is a decent little book of wisdom to have and one that would definitely be a conversation-starter if you left it lying around. Otherwise I do like the wit that was used in making the book and there are some small nuggets that are better in this Ruby way than in the original format.

Ruby Gloom's Keys to Happiness is a gem of a book. Measuring about 7x6 inches and containing 48 pages, it's part cute gothic art book part children's book. Having been unable to find much information about it online prior to purchasing my copy (on eBay), I was pleasantly surprised to discover what a quality item it is. It features black flocking (think soft fuzz) on the front and back cover, and the pages inside are all made of thick, glossy, fully inked paper. The binding is stitched, rather than glued, for extra durability.

Rather than telling a story, the book consists of a series of vignettes. Each full-page image of official Ruby Gloom art work is paired with a quote/quasi piece of advice on the opposite page. For example, the words "Two heads are better than one...especially when they're both on the same body." is paired with a picture of Ruby sewing additional heads onto the bodies of her stuffed animals. The art is gorgeous, but while the writing is acceptably silly and inoffensive, it's nothing spectacular.

Fans of the Ruby Gloom cartoon will find some aspects slightly out of character (for instance, book Ruby claims to avoid Misery as much as possible), and while most of the familiar faces are here in some form, Frank, Len, and Iris don't appear at all.

All in all, I love this book, and I think any Ruby fan would be delighted to add it to their collection (for a reasonable price!), and children (especially those with spooky leanings) should enjoy the adorable full-color artwork and the quirky platitudes.
