Owen's ordinary life is turned upside-down the day he gets involved with the Resisters and their centuries-long feud with an ancient, evil race. Eoin McNamee brings us a good first venture into the realm of middle-reader speculative fiction. One of the books i read in the summer was The Navigator by Eoin McNamee. This book is about a kid named Owen whose world around him is moving not into the future but into the past. There are elements of Philip Pullman and Garth Nix here, and it also reminded me a bit of Jeanette Winterson's recent children's novel, Tanglewreck. Owens only hope of seeing his family again is to stop the world from going back in time by destroying a machine that is hidden away.

As she struggled, she was aware of a ghostly shape, bent over her. Suddenly the pressure eased slightly. Then Pieta heard a female voice, harsh and gravelly and full of dark authority. You said to the boy the debt of your children you have repaid.
This is the first children’s book by Eoin McNamee, the Northern . It may be too easy to interpret the war in The Navigator as a metaphor for the conflict between the Irish (the Resisters) and the British (the Harsh) in Northern Ireland.
This is the first children’s book by Eoin McNamee, the Northern Irish writer of political thrillers who is best known for his debut novel, Resurrection Man, set amid the violence of Belfast in the 1980s. The imagery could apply to tyranny anywhere. But the novel goes beyond tiresome allegory and becomes a riveting tale of good and evil. McNamee’s style is refreshingly taut and spare, full of active verbs.

The Sub-Commandant swept Cati up into his arms and walked away swiftly. He did not look back. I must make up my mind about this, Chancellor said heavily.
