Skin Deep - Lois Ruby. The point of the Mall Crawl is, anything goes and the more bizarre, the better. There are no prizes for Best Costume or Most Obnoxious Behavior, because picking one winner out of the ten thousand would start a riot. You could say the whole event is a riot looking for a spark to ignite it.

Laurel is shocked by the sudden transformation of her best friend and boyfriend, Dan, a withdrawn young man who secretly joins a band of neo-Nazi skinheads and becomes involved in their violent racial demonstrations. Reprint.

This book is great for someone that is mature. It is for mature audiences because of mild and inappropriate language. But I wouldn't want to put an age limit for it. It shows you that no matter how good a kid is they can turn bad. But you can change them back from being bad just as easy.
I don't think Dan really wanted to join the skinheads when he first did. But after a while he starts to like it. He becomes mean to other races and women. He treats them like they are there to serve him. But his ex-girlfriend's little oriental brother teaches Dan to be nice just by being the way he is. Dan helps out the brother and they become great friends. He tries to keep his friendship with him a secret from his skinhead friends but they find out about him. They don't know that they are friends but they take the kid up to the mountains with them as a hostage. Find out what happens to the kid and Dan by reading the book.

The author of Skin Deep is Lois Ruby. I personally did not like this book very much. It was a little immature, but there was a point. The main point was the Skin Heads can make you do things that you wouldn't normally do. Such as, Dan *nicknamed Demon* saw a crime being committed. He saw the Skin Heads beat up a store clerk that was of a different race. Dan didn't know what to do. The Skin Heads saw him and told him not to say anything. After that Dan was brought in to their little group. Even before that Dan was interested in them. At the Mall Crawl Dan, Laurel, and some of their friends saw the Skin Heads. The Skin Heads had all sorts of tatoos. The Skin Heads hate anyone of a different race. This is the reason that I personally didn't like this book. To me, it seemed stupid and in a way a little immature, as I have said. The concept was okay, but the rest was just boring. I like actin and mystery books so that is probably why I didn't like it.

The book I read was Skin Deep by Lois Ruby. It starts off in Boulder, Colorado, when Dan Penner (the main character) goes out for the swim team and doesn't make it because they have too many whites on the team already. When he finally gets over not making the team he decides he needs a job. When he gets interviewed for a job, he doesn't make it because they need more Oriental workers. He's heading home and stops off at a gas station to get something to eat, and sees two skinheads beating up an Arabian man, he try's to stop them but they still did it until they go after Dan. They leave some of Dan's clothes there for the Police. The Neo-Nazi skinheads said they'd protect Dan if he joined there group. They send him through ignitiation so he can join their group. At the end of the book there's a big twist.(...)

Skinheads, Haters of All
Dan is a nice boy until he meets some skinheads. From then on he becomes wanted by the police, his girlfriend dumps him, and he terrorizes people for no reason. His friends and family try to get the "old Dan" back. They are mostly nice to him. After that he withdraws more and hangs with the skinheads only. Dan gets expelled and goes to jail for awhile then moves to Maine, to start a new life.
I really enjoyed this book I would give this book a 10 out 10. It taught me that you can overcome hate no matter how much of a part in your life it is. This book had a great plot and good characters. It is one f the best books I've read this year.

Living in Australia, the violence of racism that occurs in this book doesn't really happen here. But racism will occur anywhere where there is prejudice and ignorance, and this book exemplifies that fact. I thought this was so good i even gave it to my TEACHER to read!

I've read this book more than once and I still think it is excellent. Racism is violence, and it is something we have to deal with every day; I feel it is an important issue. This novel was amazing at portraying the actions, words and feelings of its characters in a way that was interesting to read, yet keeping a very close relationship with reality. This book is gripping, and it makes you think after you have put it down for the last time. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books with a little of everything, and a lot of truth.

This book was wonderfully written on a very controversal subject. It's about Dan a very confused teen going through a hate period and blames every minority for his problems. Laurel is his girlfriend who is watching the change from a distance ever since he told her to back off. I find it somewhat reflecting a lot of my friends lives. It is very realisticly written unlike most teen books. I gave it an A+
Skin Deep was so informational. It shows a veiw from each side. And that hate never wins.
