First, the writer tries too hard to be l, often having the book coming off more like a journal entry than a full-fledged book.

Church is church, right? Well, not so much, as any Baptist teen will find when visiting a friend's Episcopal church, or any Lutheran visitor to a Pentecostal service will discover. So what's the difference? Why are there any differences at all? Though churches are as individual as the members they serve, Katie Meier clears up some of the confusion regarding the basic Christian denominations. Written for everyday teens (rather than, say, theology majors) this guide clearly spells out the unique qualities of each sect, while at the same.

Consequently, churches and whole denominations will vary greatly depending upon the geographical location and cultural values of the people themselves. Of course, these are not the only reasons that different denominations exist, but practical matters such as these often play significant roles in church divisions. Denominational Unity. Finally, it should be noted that a lack of uniformity among Christian denominations does not necessarily imply a lack of unity.

Are other Christians from different denominations not true Christians? . By contrast, there are differences on critical major points in non-biblical denominations and cults, including those who claim identity as ‘Christian’ and use much of the same terminology but often mean something different. For example, the Christ of theological liberalism, Jehovah’s witnesses, and Mormonism is good but not God, and God in general is substantially redefined.

This is a good - ok - review of some Christian Churches.

There were some issues that were not detailed but, maybe that is for another book. The book gave some points about these churches that could appeal to a teen and whether they would even entertain the idea of visiting these types of churches. My personal experience of visiting some 45 different Christian Denominational churches in 2005, might enhance the authors knowledge. But, as this book was written for informational purposes only, it is a good - quick guide.

As an added note: The book did offer a brief view of the origins of each denomination listed, (Church History)!

In response to the last reviewer, I can only say that before you attack other Christian churches you should first read the Bible and understand what Christianity is first. What did Jesus say about baptism? No, Catholics do not "worship" the Pope (where did that come from?). The essence of our pluralistic society is that we have many different Christian denominations. Allowing our young people to see what we have in common with each other will create a society built upon respect for our diversity and not promote useless ignorant misunderstandings to perpetuate.

The upside: I think the author does a great job of giving snapshots to each denomination. I have not read every snapshot, but of the ones I have read, I have found them to be helpful as a youth pastor, especially for teenagers who are simply wanting a non-judgmental explanation of some of the denominational differences.

The downside: Some of the author's phrasing I thought was a bit dangerous in the first few chapters, leaving God's truth to be as each of us interpret it. Such as "...listen to where God is leading you personally, and then decide how you believe the story of His truth should be told." 12-1 That's a bit too relative for me.

We are the body of Christ and we must learn how God gifts us differently (mind, heart, ability) and uses those differences for His glory. This takes an openness as well as an understanding that not all differences are God's gifting and therefore we must also guard against misinterpreting the Bible to say whatever we believe or want it to.

Therefore, I do not recommend this book for teenagers because I do believe some of the phrasing in the beginning can too easily be misunderstood. I do use this book as a personal resource when students have questions about other denominations (as well as another similar book "why so many gods?" in regard to different religions - same publisher).
