This book was well-written; it's very Willow-oriented. Although the cover looks sort of like Willow & Xander are an item, this is misdirection.
We first see Buffy unhappy because a land developer is going to put an amusement park where a well, regular park exists. He's going to throw a super block party for Sunnydale High students & Cordelia is in charge of making it happen. Willow is against the project because it's her park where she made many happy memories. Hence, the unhappy Slayer.
Things get twisted when the baby Willow is sitting for is stolen and a member of an angry tribe of fairies is left in his place. We soon find out this isn't the first child to disappear from the same neighborhood in a matter of weeks. The fairies expect Willow to get rid of the project and make it snappy. She doesn't "snap", so they kidnap her as well.

Buffy novels are usually enjoyable, heart-warming and thrilling. I'm sorry to write, "Unnatural Selection" doesn't offer that. The premise was promising; Willow's environmental activism, a possessed baby and Xander's comic book pal. Hutch, who's chock full of intrigue, could have been developed a bit more. The characterization of the Scoobies wasn't bad, but the plot was so divergent and non-linear. This reader never became fully invested in the novel. The big unanswered question involves the connection between the faeries and the vampires and did Odom completely forget that Buffy had a mother? Odom has written better Buffy novels. Skip this one.

Willow isn't too happy with her new baby-sitting job. The strange noises she hears in the house are starting to scare her, but nothing could prepare her for being attacked by a creature that has taken the place of baby Tad. Only just managing to get away, Willow can't stop thinking about what happened and is haunted by images of the missing child. At the same time, Buffy has her hands full with the vampires of Sunnydale. When she and Giles discover some ancient artefacts at an archaeological site, it seems they may some how be connected to the missing children. But what is behind the disappearances and why will no one do anything about it?
"Unnatural Selection" is a great addition to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series, although you don't have to be a fan of the TV programme to enjoy this book. This is probably one of the best young adult Buffy books around. The author manages to write convincingly about the characters and they all act as you expect them to. The plot was fast paced, enjoyable and kept me reading right up to the end. I recommend this book to fans of the series and any one who likes a mix of horror and fantasy.

This book was the second i read from the 'Buffy the vampire slayer' bookseries, and it was what inspired me to continue. I found the beginning, the scene in which Willow discovers baby Tad has been abducted, dragged on a bit, it should have gotten straight to the exciting bit a bit quicker. However the description was impecable and the tension mounting was extremely effective. I particulary felt the way that this book focused on Willow more than Buffy, was a nice turn in events as far as the television show is concerned. This book is good for fans of the character Willow, rather than Buffy. The main problem i felt with this book was, it did not explain things very well when it came to the Spring Blowout. This event, which Cordelia was orginising came as a very important factor in the storyline, and i strongly feel more emphasis on the details of this should have been explained. But the final fight made this all worth while, you can really imagine the cave in which the fairies dwelled and feel the concern Oz had for Willow. A wonderful book and well worth reading.

To be honest, I ordered this book out of boredom... I didn't expect it to be the best of books, but at least I would have something to read... I don't read often, books usually can't hold my interest long enough for me to finish them... I mostly read BTVS Books and Biographies/Autobiographies.
That said, I LOVED this book... Mel Odom is one of my favorite BTVS Authors, he's incredibly talented... This book had my interest from the beginning and I really couldn't put it down. I started reading it and finished it within a little over an hour, the way that the characters were written was very much like they were on the show... Their reactions to things, the way that they each talked... Very much like the 3rd season version of the characters on BTVS.
And I loved the whole Faery story... I don't want to spoil the book for anyone who hasn't read it, which i'll end up doing if I go into it anymore... So i'll just say this if you're a BTVS fan... Read this Book! Even if you haven't read many, or any, of the books and aren't sure if you'd like them.. Read this one.
I really do miss Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I still watch the reruns on FX and on Sunday nights on the WB.

Fantasy and horror collide in this Buffy novel. Willow is in the center of a growing evil. Babies are disappearing and no one seems to want to do anything about it. When the vampire population explodes the slayer has her hands full. When Willow is kidnapped to be used as a human scarifice the scoobies moblize to save her. Angel, Buffy and Oz make a good team. The action is exciting. I enjoyed the battle with the little people. They held their own.I believed Angel and Buffy could be mortally wounded by the fairies. The folklore was very interesting. One of the most moving moments is Angel's conversation with a grieving mother. I recommend this book. A reader does not need to be a fan to enjoy this excellent addition to Buffy fiction.
