His constant questioning. My tale touches how the Firebringer came to be born among the unicorns, and what his coming meant to Aljan, son of Korr. But to start my tale, I must begin a little before the Firebringer, on a day near winter’s end when Jan was six years old, nearly half-grown, though still counted among the colts. It had been a long, cold, dull winter, and the prince’s son longed fiercely for the fiery storms of spring.

The series was re-published in paperback by Firebird Books in 2003.

I have loved this book since middle school and my old copy was falling apart so I got a new one. When I was in Elementary school I would pretty much ONLY read horse books. Nothing else. When I was in 7th grade the school library was getting rid of old books and my friend grabbed the absolute last horse book available. I was mad but saw that this one had a unicorn on it so I grabbed it. The book went unread for a few months but then one day I finally picked it up.....and thus began my venture into fantasy. I ditched the horse books (for the most part, I still read a few because I still loved horses) and started branching out to read other types of fiction including my discovery of the Harry Potter books (which was the start of what will always be quite an obsession for me). I loved the story, I loved the characters, etc. This book started my love for stories. It's been about 16 years now since I came across this book and I still love to read it to this day. :)

Having read this when I was 11 it was a story that always stayed with me even though I had long forgotten the title. I finally found it and am pleasantly surprised to find it was the first installment in a trilogy. It was as magical as I remembered and I am excited to read the next books in the series after all these years!

I first read this book when I was 11 -- I'm 39 now, and I've lost track of how many times I've re-read this great adventure! I already own two hard copies, but I had to get it for the Kindle, too! It may be unusual, having all-animal protagonists, but Pierce describes things so beautifully, I'll bet you'll have no problem relating to the characters and imagining life as a unicorn! The next two books are great too, but this first one (which was the only book for a long time, and stands alone fairly well) will always have an extra-special place in my heart.

This is a book about unicorns.

Many people would simply LOL at this statement and leave. Do not. This book is a piece of brilliance, poetic brilliance, literary brilliance, mythological and dazzling brilliance. I love it.

The book is about the world of unicorns, who live in a valley called the Vale and have their own history and folklore of how they, and the neighboring creatures (such as gryphons and wyverns), came to live where they do now. They have a prince named Korr, and the main character is his son, Jan, who's wild and fun-loving to the point of being almost dangerous. When it's time for him to make his journey and rite of passage into unicorn adulthood, he discovers his true destiny and a mystery about his life he never even had guessed at before.

What I love most about this book was its language, its writing. Meredith Ann Pierce takes words and phrases and weaves them together into pure beauty, like nothing I've ever seen. One that struck me in particular was, "...he could feel their kindred anticipation, tasted it almost, like the dying of the dark."

Also very impressive is the unicorns' language and culture. They have their own words like "Hist" and "list" ("be quiet" and "listen", respectively) and also "hale" which means essentially "Okay;" they often say "Are you hale?" and that word is derived from the name of a princess in their history, Halla. Unicorn history is told in great detail during a sort of moonlight dance/storytelling time the unicorns perform monthly. The unicorns perform a lot of things on a schedule, a schedule made by their Ring, essentially the society all adult unicorns are a part of. One character says a little scathingly that unicorns cannot (or dare not) do anything outside of the Ring. One of the things that Jan questions (and through his journey and meetings with other species, he questions a lot of what he's been told) is why the unicorns have to be a part of the Ring and follow such strict rules. And one thing he learned at the end of his journey is what fire is, because while unicorns tell of the coming of the Firebringer, and the narrator will sometimes describe things as "flitting like flame" or "fire-white" the unicorns have never seen fire and don't know what the word means. I'll tell you that Jan gets to see.

Birth of the Firebringer is the beginning of a beautiful, dramatic and promising legend that I want to see the arch and climax of. I ordered books two and three before I was halfway done with this one. Order it now, and be amazed.

An absolutely beautiful book. Don't believe the upper limit on the age requirements - this book is good for everyone. Doesn't matter if you're a small child or a grown adult.

Indeed, it's worth noting that small children may need help understanding some of the concepts that the series presents. Read it with your kids if you get it for them.

Slow to start, but once it gets going, you can't put it down. I find some of the imagery hard to imagine, but as the story is about a bunch of unicorns, the author uses descriptions of different horse coat patterns. If I were more versed in what these patterns looked like, I'm sure the imagery would be easy enough to envision.

I still rate it at five stars because the story is phenomenal and leaves you wanting more.

I liked this book. It had a wonderfuly diverse vernacular portaying a delightfully detailed world. I read it first when I was 10 and didn't understand any of it and only remembered it vaugley, but it was the book that launched me into the world of fantasy art and writing. After many years I have found it again and it has proven to be everything I'd hoped it would be.
good fun for the middle school or older reader
