Philip Briggs, Andrew Roberts. Somebody once said that if you planted a walking stick overnight in the soil of Uganda, it would take root before morning dawned. Of all Africa's safari destinations, this is the most fertile. Philip Briggs has been exploring Africa since 1986, when he spent several months backpacking on a shoestring from Nairobi to Cape Town. He has visited more than two dozen African countries and written about most of them for specialist travel and wildlife magazines including Africa Birds & Birding, Africa Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Travel Africa and Wanderlust.

The Bradt Guide to Uganda, now more than 500-pages long, is the definitive travel handbook to this wonderful but oft-neglected destination, not only providing comprehensive background information to its varied national parks, towns and other cultural attractions, but also including detailed.

Uganda boasts the most varied - and arguably the most exciting - safari circuit in Africa

One of the smaller African countries, Uganda is characterised by forests, mountains and lakes. To wildlife enthusiasts it is the home of the mountain gorilla, chimpanzees and over 1,000 bird species. This book offers tourists a guide to Uganda.'

I bought this guide before going to Uganda to work for 6 months as a volunteer nurse. I researched the country extensively, as I planned to travel while there and this book, was by far the best and most helpful. I took it everywhere and it became my "bible". The main criticism I have of Uganda travel guides, is they didn't prepare me about how very few Ugandans speak English. I went all over the country and only the Ugandans who can afford to pay school fees and go for their entire lives, speak enough English to communicate. Each village in Uganda has it's own unique language and there is no commonalities between the hundreds of languages. The doctors with whom I worked were only able to communicate with those from their specific village. If you stay in Kampala, many speak great English, but not really anywhere else. This was a big surprise to me. One more tip...credit cards are not accepted anywhere, because of fraud and I also recommend you trade back all your Ugandan shillings before you leave the country, as it's basically worthless anywhere else. Just a few tips no book included.

i love bradt guides for their detailed information. this book was indispensible on my recent trip to uganda. however, i do wish it provided a little more background and practical information on gorilla tracking. many people who go to uganda do so for tracking and it would have been helpful to have more information about the different gorilla families, the pros and cons of each tracking location, etc. other than that, it's a great guide.

I've traveled to over 40 countries in the past 15 years and read between 1-3 travel guides before going to each country.

This is one of the best travel guides I've ever read. Very detailed, current, no superficiality. Strong on history, sights and culture. I really can't think of how this book could have been improved.

And read Abyssinian Chronicles before you go to Uganda. Wonderful character development and a Ugandan's perspective on history and culture in that country.

Used this book for 2 trips to Uganda working with an NGO to help street kids. It was the best travel book I found. Info was great - money, health, security, history, travel, lodging and culture. Wish I had it for the first 3 trips. We even went on a game drive and boat ride in Murchison Falls National Park and saw great wildlife. A must read before you go and take it with you!

This book is talking more about touring on a safari than the other information that one would want when traveling to a country in Africa. It just has too much of this in the book....I want more about the living and what to look for, etc. I don't plan on going on a safari....been on 2 and this is my 4th country I am visiting in Africa.....Safari's are old to me. This book was not for me....waste of my money.
Get on U-Tube and you can learn a lot more because it has little clipping of the country.....traveling around and even safaris has some clippings. Don't buy the book....get online....INTERNET is GREAT!!!
Waste of my money

I got it for my nephew, and he really likes it, as he is there now. He is using it daily, and it is recently printed.

We have read this book front to back and though we don't leave for a few weeks we feel so much more informed about opportunities within and country and tips to be better prepared. Great resource!
An exceptional guidebook for anyone interested in East Africa. The detail and description around the national parks, lodging and other attractions in Uganda are superb. Can't wait for the next edition, to be released in Fall 2013
