Since publishing Crooked Grow the Trees last September, I’ve learned I did everything backwards. I’m determined to put a little effort into getting it out there, but also know there will come a day when the introvert inside me, pushed far outside my comfort zone, may say enough. When that day comes, I will rest easy, knowing I did not let fear keep me from following those whispers, knowing I did my best, even if doing so backwards from conventional wisdom.

An enjoyable guide with enticing photos which compares and contrasts some of the world's top tourist sights with those a little more off the beaten track and less crowded such as Avebury v Stonehenge and the Roman Arena in Pula v the Colosseum in Rome. Sometimes the cons of the "busier" places are a bit over done, such as making out the Greek Islands are a let down compared to the Croatian ones, when there are some fantastic quieter Greek islands if that is what you want and Crete is so huge it's not hard to find somewhere away from the main resorts.
This book certainly gives you some ideas of places to visit that I had never heard of. A great book to dip in and out of and return to on many occasions

Anyone who travels a lot has seen places that blew you away, places that met your high expectations, and places that really disappointed you. This book compares the traditional "must-see" sights of the world with alternatives that are just as stunning but less known and less crowded, summarising the plusses and minuses of each one so you can decide which site will give you the experience you're really looking for. As Bryson notes, it will also make you aware of so many beautiful places you'd never previously heard of, that you'll dejectedly realise you can't possibly see everything that's worth seeing in one lifetime. But you'll probably make better choices with the time that you have.
