Quoting from the book Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park by Vicky Spring and Tom Kirkendall: The color of the rocks is determined by the presence or absence of iron. The bright red rocks found along the Grinnel Glacier trail were deposited in a shallow ocean environment where the iron was oxidized by the tidal exposure to the air. Rocks with this coloration often have old ripple marks or ancient mud crack lines. The rich green-colored rocks were formed in deeper water than the red rocks

I bought this book in 2005 to help plan a week-long backpacking trip to Glacier NP. At the same time I bought the similar book from Falcon Press. I am re-reading both now because I am taking the family out there this summer to do day hiking and family light-weight things.

Although both did the job well, I especially like Vicky Spring's version. It was mainly little things. I liked how the maps were drawn in a relief or 3-D style. Her photos often had people in them which made them less static. The hikes are well organized by logical areas in the park. Vicky Spring does a good job of covering everything from easy family-friendly strolls to strenuous multi-night backpacking trips.

The previous review was correct in that the title is misleading. This is definitely a hiking/backpacking book for Glacier National Park and a good one at that.

We just came back from Glacier National Park for the first time. We used this book nonstop for hiking information. It was great.
If you need information about accomodations and other stuff use another book. I loved having this book.

I agree with other reviews about the title; it's a bit misleading, but thankfully there are reviews. It's basically a trail guide book for Waterton Park in Canada and Glacier National Park in the US, but that is exactly what I was looking for. It details the trails well, elevation changes throughout the trail, degree of difficulty etc. Since we went numerous day hikes, we carried it in our back packs on each trip and would double check it periodically if needed. It was very handy. Good purchase.

This book was very helpful. It showed elevation gains and described each trail in detail. Referred back to it many times when deciding on day hikes. While we were out there, I noticed other people with the book.

This book helped us navigate the park - great descriptions of the trails and hikes. The difficulty ratings were accurate and helpful in deciding where to go. I highly recommend this and the Short Hikes book.

This was the perfect hiking guidebook to have along on our recent trip to Glacier National Park. As with her other books, Vicky Spring provides complete, accurate, and helpful reviews of each trail, including stats (length, elevation gain/loss, high point, approx hiking time, season, difficulty, and what USGS map to refer to. In addition, maps and elevation profiles are included for each hike. Wonderful photos by Tom Kirkendall for nearly every hike provide additional information and visual interest. Each section (covering a different area of the Park) begins with recommended "short hikes" perfect for those with limited time or energy. Highly recommended.
If you are planning a trip to Glacier like I was, then get this book. Beautiful photos and nice details on hiking in the park. Good section on the natual history of the park and where to stay.
