Series: National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map (Book 803). Good map with lots of trails marked to explore. In addition, because it is a topographic map, it will be easier to find trails that are within my ability to hike. At 67 going on 68 years old that is really helpful. Nothing worse than hiking up a trail only to find nothing interesting to see at the top.

A 2015 review: I rarely give a product two stars, and National Geographic's Trails Illustrated Maps generally give very good elevation profiles, point by point mileage and clear trail routes. But there is an implicit assumption when you buy a map that a trail shown on the map exists on the ground. If it does not a potentially dangerous situation can arise. Speaking from first hand knowledge, I am disappointed to report that trails shown on this map have not in fact been maintained since this map was produced in 2006. In 2008 a large and severe wildfire burned the American River area. Since that time, trees have fallen over the trails, and where the trails cross burn areas, they are overgrown with brush, covered with dead timber, and close to impossible to follow. Poison oak and blackberry abound, and even the best route finders will not find the trails near the American River bottom.

Given that National Geographic is an excellent publisher, and I have given favorable reviews of their products in the past, I suspect this map was accurate when made in 2006. But they have not updated this map since it was published, unlike many of the other maps in their line of products. At this point, I cannot recommend you buy or use this map. If you cannot find an alternate, be prepared to find that what is represented on the map does not exist on the ground and take appropriate precautions.

Nice map was very helpful but had a little trouble telling the difference between public and private land. We bought it for hunting and didn't want to venture into private land. Shows all the back roads well. Will buy other areas also.

I have used these maps for both driving back roads and hiking trails. the scale splits the difference nicely. The paper is very durable as well--thick and plastic coated to be water resistant.

National Geographic leads again. Excellent map with current info. Easy to read graphics. Highly durable. Good for planning the next adventure!
