The Laines have authored or contributed to a number of Frommer's travel guides, including Frommer's Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks and Frommer's Utah. There are other books that give more detail about what to do after you get to a national park. There are hiking guides and driving guides, for instance.

Frommer's Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks (Park Guides). The only drawback is that it doesn't include the American East parks. The value of this book is that it refers to an abundance of resources that the novice and/or experienced traveller can utilize.

My husband and three children just spent three weeks driving across the country to California and back. We stopped at Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and a few others. I purchased this book one year before the trip to help me plan, but it was equally helpful as a quick reference. The maps are great, the directions fabulous, and the reviews of restaurants and accomodations right on point, except for the prices, which of course are now higher. The descriptions of the hiking trails and points of interest are worth the price of the book alone, but there is much more than that. I would categorize this as a "must-have" for anyone visiting one or more of the western national parks. By the way, everyone needs to see these places!!

I bought this along with some other park books for a 2 week roadtrip I recently took. It was by far the most useful of the guidebooks I bought. If you are going to one specific park buy books specific to it, but if you are roadtripping and plan on visiting a few, it is far easier to get this book and not have to hassle with a car full of books. Frommer's guidebooks are by no means the best guides every written, but they are quite adequate. The information was pertinent and useful. 3.5 stars for the quality of the content (uninspired but useful), 5 stars for convenience. 4.25 stars overall.

FROMMER'S never lets down. They do an excellent job of telling you everything you need to know, sometimes what not to do! Straight forward, useful, and enjoyable information. Even the older books are still a good read. You can save money by buying older books, but lets face it--the National Parks do not change!

I like this book for giving an overview of the highlights of each park. It's useful in seeing what is in the area, but not much more. For the parks we are actually going to visit, I will absolutely need to seek out more information before deciding on hikes, camping/sleeping choices, etc.

Frommer's books are honest unlike a lot of other travel materials.

This National Parks of the American West Book is fabulous. We've had so much fun planning our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park for this summer. There is such a wealth of information contained in this book that has helped us already, and we plan to take it with us when we travel. Not only that, there are lots of other National Parks contained in this book, so it will be great to use if we visit another park on a future trip. The book was in great condition. Thanks so much!!!!

I needed help in planning a month long trip to see up to ten National Parks in Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. This book is the answer. It provides all the needed information. Maps, campgrounds, motels, where to eat. Especially useful is a section for each park titled, "what to do if you only have one day". This helped me get a idea of how much time to alot to each park. Also extremly useful is the detailed breakdown of potential hikes for each park. Decribes length, what you'll see, difficulty level, etc..
This book is truely an invaluable resource for planning a trip out west.
OK.
